Each spring, Penn State's Journalism Department selects a handful of aspiring international correspondents to spend spring break reporting from another country. This international reporting experience has been one of the most incredible opportunities for me to engage my journalism and travel interests.
My in-depth print story is available online on The Lion's Roar with photos. I interviewed Cuban asylum seekers staying in Panama City, since the rescinding of the "wet foot, dry foot" policy allowing Cuban migrants to enter the U.S. without a visa had turned Panama from a "bridge" to North America to a "bottleneck".
This story, "My Prison is Panama," placed in the TOP 10 feature stories in the 58th annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation’s Journalism Awards Program, in which 154 feature writing entries were received. This story also placed first in the Society of Professional Journalist Region 1 Awards in the category of General News Reporting.
